5 Signs Your Charging Port Needs Fixing (Not Your Cable)

Bought three new cables and your phone still charges badly? The cable might not be the problem.

Blaming the cable is the natural first instinct — and sometimes it's right. But if you've replaced the cable and the problem persists, the port itself is the more likely culprit. Here's how to tell.

Sign 1: The Cable Only Charges at a Specific Angle

If you have to prop your phone up at a particular angle or bend the cable slightly to get it to charge, that's a classic sign of port damage. The contacts inside the port are bent or misaligned, meaning the cable isn't making a solid connection unless it's held just right.

Sign 2: The Cable Falls Out Easily

Your charging cable should clip in with a satisfying resistance and stay put. If it falls out with the slightest knock — or just falls out on its own — the port's retention clips are worn or broken. This is especially common on phones that spend most of their life plugged in.

Sign 3: Charging Is Intermittent

The phone shows as charging, then stops, then starts again — often without you touching it. This intermittent behaviour usually means a loose internal connection in the port, or partial corrosion on the contacts. A cleaning can sometimes fix this; otherwise a full port replacement is needed.

Sign 4: Dust or Fluff Visible in the Port

Pockets and bags pack lint into charging ports over time, and compacted fluff acts as an insulator between the cable and the port contacts. This is surprisingly common and, crucially, doesn't require a full replacement — a careful cleaning with the right tools fixes it in minutes.

💡

Don't try to clear the port yourself with a pin or paperclip. You risk bending the contacts or scratching off the gold plating, turning a £15 cleaning job into a £39 replacement.

Sign 5: The Port Is Visibly Corroded

Look closely with a torch. If you see any discolouration, green-ish residue, or obvious corrosion inside the port, you likely have water or moisture damage to the connector. This needs professional cleaning — and if the corrosion has spread to the board, a deeper assessment.

Cleaning vs. Replacement: What Do I Actually Need?

  • Lint / dust only — professional cleaning (from £15, takes 10 minutes)
  • Bent contacts or worn retention clips — port replacement (from £39)
  • Corrosion / water damage — cleaning first, then assessment
  • No charging at all despite a working cable — likely port replacement
